I was working as a graphic artist for 15 years until in 2001, I needed to pick
up a brush and see where realizing my lifelong dream would take me.
After living in
Melbourne all of my life, in 2000 I moved to Byron
Bay where the pursuit of an
unrealized obsession to paint began. Self taught with a few inspirational workshops thrown
in I began painting full time; I was determined. After a few months of
painting I decided to approach a fine art gallery in Town to see if they
would like to represent me. I took with me a framed A4 figurative piece but
the gallery owner was busy so I put it on the counter. A customer was there
at the time who asked me who’s work this was, I told him it was mine and he
asked me how much I wanted for it. The gallery owner was still busy so I
said $600; He said he would take it! Needless to say this is the first gallery representing me in Byron. Thus began my professional painting
career!
After 2 years of
painting and selling proficiently in Byron we decided to move back to Melbourne. The thought of showing in Melbourne
was an exciting prospect. Upon returning to Melbourne and re-experiencing
it’s moody skies, I felt a need to lighten up my style. I started to pay
more attention to social personas. I began to paint the multiple girls seemingly the
same girl echoed subtly in different stages of being. The girls can be
viewed as social clones or facets of the same person. The more you look at
her/them the more you see in the faces, attitudes such as calmness,
indifference, curiosity and always an interplay; That’s
what fuels my fascination with them and hopefully captures the imagination
of viewers when they look at them.
In November 2003 a new gallery was to open in Bridge Rd Richmond, a friend of mine told the manager about my work, she called me and came to and see it. From the first moment she saw it she believed in my work and took me on. Her experience
in the art world and more importantly her honed intuition paid off for both of us.
Last year I started to paint the single independent woman with what started out as the French "attitude", Savoir fare, au-revoire, reverie etc. I enjoy the care-freeness, self confidence that these women emanate and represent I love to create and play with the atmosphere of
these pieces.
At the same time I have always
experimented and played with abstract expressionism a genre that I admire very much. It's a purely selfish and natural process for me it feeds my fascination and love for color,
tone, form and texture. Instinctive painting, that comes from within and seemingly paints itself. There is a particular magic to abstract painting for me that also lends its results to my figurative work.
Thank you to anyone who has invested in my work, enabling me to pursue my dream. I love to paint I can only hope that the people who see my work enjoy them as much as I enjoy painting them.
